- INTRODUCTION
-
- One of the most used software packages is the DOS SHELL. A DOS
- SHELL is a program which provides an easier means of executing
- DOS commands such as copying files, deleting files and making
- subdirectories to name a few. EzDoss accomplishes this and much
- more.
-
- Since 1983 I have used many different DOS shells. I first started
- with SWEEP in the CP/M world. Once introduced to IBM PCs, I have
- been exposed to various DOS shells. Each one has some really fine
- features, but none of them have all the features that I
- personally like in a DOS shell. So, I have written EzDoss to
- incorporate all the features into one program.
-
- As I became proficient in using IBM PCs, I was asked many
- questions by novice users on DOS commands. In designing EzDoss, I
- decided to design the program easy to use for the novice by
- providing verification prompts, menus and having an extensive
- help system. For the more experience user I have included QUICK
- KEYS, to bypass many of the menus, and an EXPERT MODE which
- bypasses many verification screens.
-
- I hope you enjoy this program, which was written in Turbo Pascal
- 5.00 and uses the excellent Turbo Professional tools, a must for
- any programmer using Turbo Pascal. Feel free to send me comments,
- suggestions and praise at:

-
- EzDoss is designed to run on an IBM PC/XT/AT microcomputer and
- compatibles. 512K RAM is required and a hard disk is recommended.

-
- FEATURES
-
- Now that you know why I wrote EzDoss, the following is a list of
- just a few of the features I perceive as the most important.
-
- - Tagging multiple files. Multiple files can be
- marked, "tagged". EzDoss provides several ways of
- "tagging" files; by "tagging" the highlighted file,
- by selecting a "pattern" which tags all matching
- files and by "date" where files which can be
- "tagged" if they have the same date, are newer or
- older as selected by the user. Once a group of files
- have been "tagged" they can be COPIED, DELETED,
- MOVED, RENAMED, VIEWED, EDITED, PRINTED or ZIPPED.
-
- - Create, rename or delete subdirectories. These
- common subdirectory commands can be easily done
- through EzDoss.
-
- - Display files in two (2) formats. Files can be
- displayed in the "long" format which displays
- seventeen (17) files per screen (page). The file
- date, time and size are displayed on the same line.
- Depressing function key F9 will "toggle" to the
- "short" format which displays fifty one (51) files
- per screen. The file date, time and size of the
- highlighted file is displayed along the bottom line
- of the window.
-
- - Display a partial listing of the files in a
- particular drive/subdirectory. If a subdirectory has
- many files you may want to view only some of them.
- the "Mask Include" and "Mask Exclude" options
- provide the means to include or exclude specified
- files.
-
- - Locating a specified file(s) on a disk drive(s).
- When using a hard disk, a file can be stored in a
- subdirectory where you did not expect it. The
- "Locate" option will locate all the files that match
- the specified "mask".
-
- - PkZip support. PkZip lets you compress one or more
- files into an archive called a .ZIP file. PkUnzip
- will extract one or more of the files in such an
- archive, creating an exact, full-size copy of the
- original file.
-
- Phil Katz's ZIP and UNZIP package can thus save you
- a great deal of hard disk space. In some cases the
- compressed version will be 50 to 80 percent smaller
- than the original.
-
-
- -3-
-
- EzDoss provides three ways of using PkZip and PkUnzip.
-
- The above features are just the tip of the iceberg of the
- features offered in EzDoss.
-
-
- -4-
-
- FILES ON DISK
-
- The following are the files that should be included with EzDoss.
-

-
- CONFIGURING EZDOSS
-
- When EzDoss is run for the first time, there are some information
- that you have to enter in order for EzDoss to perform some of its
- functions. Once this information has been entered, it is stored
- in the file EZ.CFG. The information may be modified later under
- the CONFIGURE menu option when in the FILES MODE.
-
- The following is the information that has to be entered.
-
- ITEM DEFINITION
- ------------- ----------------------------------------
- Source Path When EzDoss is loaded into memory, it
- will scan the drive specified in the
- Source Path, display that drives "TREE",
- read all the files in the Source Path,
- display them in the FILES BOX and go
- immediately to the FILES MODE.
-
- EXAMPLE: C:\DOS
-
- NOTE: The Source Path MUST BE ENTERED!!
-
- ZIP/UNZIP Path The complete path where PKZIP and
- PKUNZIP is located.
-
- EXAMPLE: C:\ARCHIVE
-
- Initial Sort EzDoss can sort files eight (8)
- different ways. When EzDoss is loaded
- into memory it will sort the files on
- the Source Path using the Initial Sort
- found in EZ.CFG. The Initial Sort is
- selected from a menu.
- Define Diskette EzDoss can format diskettes without
- leaving the program which can be handy.
- In order format correctly, EzDoss needs
- to know the maximum capacity of each
- drive.
-
- Ascii Editor Path The complete path, including editor name
- to be used when editing an Ascii file.
-
- EXAMPLE: C:\EZ\EZED.EXE
-
- Hex Editor Path The complete path, including editor name
- to be used when editing a hex file.
-
- EXAMPLE: C:\EZ\HE.COM
-
-
- -6-
-
- ITEM DEFINITION
- ---------------- ----------------------------------------
- File Viewer Path The complete path, including file viewer
- name to be used when viewing an Ascii
- file.
-
- EXAMPLE: C:\EZ\EZV.EXE
-
- Beep Mode When an invalid key is depressed, (i.e.
- An up arrow key when the first file is
- highlighted) the computer will "Beep".
- The beeping can be "toggled" ON/OFF.
- Choose your choice from the menu.
-
- Once these items are entered, they will be stored in EZ.CFG and
- EzDoss will begin.
-
-
- -7-
-
- USING THE EZDOSS'S HELP
-
- This document is very short because the main manual is part of
- EzDoss's help system. There are over sixty help topics that can
- be viewed.
-
- To use EzDoss's help system is easy. At almost any time in the
- program, depressing function key F1 will bring up the related
- help topic. When in the help, depressing function key F1 again
- will bring up a list of help topics.
-
- From the FILES MODE, TREE MODE, and the VIEW FILES WITHIN ZIP
- MODE, the help topic menu can be evoked by depressing the ALT key
- and function key F1.
-
- Spend some time in the help system, because I spent a lot of time
- creating it and hopefully all the information needed to run
- EzDoss is provided.
-
-
- -8-
-

- The JBT ToolBox
-
- The program you are using is one of several programs that I have
- written that are either public domain or shareware.
-
- These programs have appeared on bulletin boards, distributed by
- ShareWare clearing houses and are included in several of the
- Dvorak-Osborne series of books.
-
- Most users of these programs are not aware that the other
- programs that I have written exist.
-
- I have created The JBT Tools to provide an interface that allows
- all my programs to be used.
-
- The following is the programs included in the JBT Tools and a
- brief description of each program.
-
- EzDoss
- EzDoss is a Dos Shell. As with all Dos shells actions
- can be taken on multiple files. I have used many Dos
- shells in the past and they have many features that are
- great. Unfortuneatly, all these features are not
- included in one shell. Therefore, I wrote EzDoss to
- include the features I like the best. Some of the
- features are:
- Copying/Moving
- When copying or moving files and there is a
- file with the same name on the destination,
- most Dos Shells offer only "Overwrite"
- option.
-
- EzDoss provides several options. They are:
- OverWrite:
- This option is typical. It will
- overwrite any the file on the
- destination with the file on the
- source.
- Newer:
- This option will copy/move the file
- to the destination only if the file
- on the destination is OLDER than
- the file on the source.
- Copy/Rename:
- This option will rename the file on
- the destination and copy the file
- from the source.
- Rename/Copy:
- This option will rename the source
- file, then copy the file to the
- destination.
- These options provide the most flexible
- options when copying or moving files.
-
-
- -11-
-
- Tagging Files:
- Multiple files can be "tagged". Besides
- taggin indvidual files, all files can be
- tagged, files can be tagged by specifying a
- "pattern" or by selecting a date in which
- files newer, older, same or a combination
- will be tagged.
-
- Help System:
- EzDoss's manual is online. Help for the
- current function can be displayed by
- depressing function key F1. Depressing Alt F1
- will display the list of help "topics". There
- are over fifty (50) help "topics".
-
- Zip Management:
- Many of public domain/shareware users acess
- buletin boards. Files downloaded from these
- boards are compressed into a "ZIP" file.
-
- EzDoss allows files to be "zipped", "zipped"
- files to be "unzipped" and to display files
- withing a "zip". Those files displayed within
- a "zip" can be "tagged" and "unzipped",
- viewed on the screen or deleted from the zip
- file.
-
- Disk Sort:
- When files are displayed, they can be sorted
- eight (8) different ways. This does not sort
- the files on the disk.
-
- EzDoss DOES provide a public domain program
- that can be called from within EzDoss that
- will sort the disk.
-
- Search:
- EzDoss comes with EzFind. EzFind will search
- any non executeable files for a string. This
- can be used to find a key word within
- wordprocessing files that are not Ascii.
-
- These are just a few of the many features that EzDoss
- has. I use this program every day, and I am sure you
- will find it as useful.
-
- EzEdit:
- EzEdit is a text editor. The file to be edited/created
- is diplayed in a window. EzEdit can have multiple
- windows opened.
-
- A block of text can be copied to the "clipboard" where
- the text can be copied/moved into other files.
-
-
- -12-
-
- Windows moveable and resizeable. A pop up calculator
- and Ascii chart also come with the program.
-
- EzView:
- EzView will display an Ascii file in a window. EzView
- can have multiple windows opened.
-
- Windows are moveable and resizeable.
-
- EzLocate:
- EzLocate is a file finder program. Multiple drives can
- be scanned for files which meet the user specified
- masks. Multiple masks can be specified.
-
- EzLocate can also look inside ARC and ZIP files for the
- user specified masks.
-
- Find Duplicates:
- Find Duplicates is a program that can scan multiple
- disk drives and find all the files with duplicate file
- names. Once the drive(s) have been scanned, the
- duplicate files are displayed on the screen. Each file
- can be viewed (ASCII only), renamed, supsend to DOS in
- that file's subdirectory or "tagged" for deletion.
-
- Find Duplicates can list duplicate files that are
- stored in ARC and ZIP files. If your PC has PKZIP and
- ARC or PKUNPAK, those duplicate files can be deleted
- within the ZIP or ARC files.
-
- Back Off!:
- Back Off! is an utility that you will use on a weekly
- basis. Back Off! is a multiple file extension deletion
- program. It will search any and all drivs for files
- ending with extensions matching a previously prepared
- list. (i.e. .BAK, .CHK, .$$$).
-
- Back Off! will show you the matching filenames and
- their locations, and give you the option of viewing
- them and/or "tagging" and deleting them.
-
- CopyCon:
- When I first used a MsDos PC, I wrote small batch files
- using COPY CON command from the Dos prompt. If I had a
- dime for every time i goofed and had to start over
- again, I would be a rich man. I wrote CopyCon to help
- me write small batch files.
-
- CopyCon has grown since version 1.00 and now not only
- allows simple batch files to be created/edited, but
- allows graphic boxes, Ascii characters to be inserted
- and line centering.
-
-
- -13-
-
- One of the most important features of CopyCon is the on
- line help. Not only does the help provide information
- on how CopyCon works, but it is a reference on batch
- file commands including examples.
-
- Also included are two small programs that can be used
- in batch files and two useful batch files. They are
- STATUS.BAT which will read your PC and list out its
- status. The other batch file is MENU.BAT which is a
- menuing system that is all set up.
-
- You will find that these programs will increase your
- productivity and make using your PC easier.
